What Google actually said about AI content
Google has been blunt about this. Its own guidance says using AI to help make content is not against the rules, and content is not penalised simply for being AI-assisted. The thing Google rewards is helpful, reliable, people-first content. The way that content was produced sits second to whether it answers a real question well.
So the question "will AI get me penalised?" is the wrong question. The right one is "is this page actually good for the person reading it?" If yes, the tool used to make it does not matter. If no, it would fail whether a person typed every word by hand or not.
What Google does demote, every time
There are real ways to get a site demoted, and they have nothing to do with AI by itself. The big one is scaled content abuse: mass-producing piles of pages mainly to game rankings rather than help anyone. Think hundreds of near-identical pages with only a town name swapped in. Google has handed out manual actions for exactly this, and affected sites can vanish from search entirely.
The others are old enemies. Thin, cookie-cutter pages that say nothing. Keyword stuffing. Doorway pages built only to funnel everyone to one contact form. Content that copies or lightly reworks someone else's work. None of these are an "AI problem". They are a "low effort and no value" problem, and a human can produce all of them just as easily.
Why an AI-assisted one-person studio is actually safer
Here is the part that surprises people. Using AI properly makes it easier to do the things Google rewards, not harder. The speed AI gives me is spent on the right work: more original writing per page, proper structure, faster turnaround, and time freed up to add the real local detail Google looks for.
Every page I build for you is written for a person first, then checked by hand by someone who actually understands your trade and your patch of Yorkshire. I do not spin up dozens of thin, near-identical location pages to "cover everything". One strong, genuine page beats ten thin clones, and that is the approach Google has openly told everyone to follow.
How I keep your site on the right side of the line
I build to the rules Google publishes, not to tricks that work until the next update. That means original content on every page, written to answer a real search, with no stuffed keywords or duplicated boilerplate. It means a clear address and phone number, real reviews, honest service-area pages, and proper internal links instead of orphaned doorway pages.
It also means I am straight with you about authority. A brand-new domain starts with very little trust, and no shortcut fixes that. I earn it the honest way over time, through good content, local listings and genuine reviews. That is slower than fairy dust, but it is the only thing that actually lasts.
The bottom line for your business
If someone tells you that an AI-built site is doomed on Google, they are either out of date or selling you something. Google itself disagrees with them. What gets sites demoted is laziness, duplication and spam, and I build the exact opposite of that.
You get a site that would cost five figures at a typical agency, built for around £2,000 by a real person, made to rank and to be recommended by AI search tools. I guarantee to beat any agency price, and I build it to last. If you run a business around York and want to see how that works for you, send me a quick message and I will talk you through it, no pressure.

Common questions
Does Google penalise websites made with AI?
No. Google has stated that using AI to help create content does not break its rules, and pages are not penalised just for being AI-assisted. Google judges whether a page is helpful, original and people-first, not how it was made.
So what does Google actually penalise?
Behaviour, not tools. The main targets are scaled content abuse (mass-producing low-value pages to game rankings), thin or duplicated pages, keyword stuffing, and doorway pages. A human can create all of those just as easily as a machine.
Can Google even detect AI content?
Google does not need to, because it does not penalise AI content as a category. It assesses quality and usefulness. Plenty of high-ranking pages are AI-assisted, and plenty of low-effort human pages get demoted. The dividing line is value, not authorship.
Is an AI-assisted site riskier than a hand-built one?
Not when it is done properly. The risk comes from churning out thin, repetitive pages, which is a choice, not a side effect of AI. I use AI to write more original content and add real local detail, which is exactly what Google rewards.
Will my AIwebguy site rank straight away?
Honestly, no, and anyone promising that is fibbing. A new domain has little authority, so I build solid, original pages, set up your Google Business Profile and Search Console, and earn rankings over time. No paid ads needed, but it does take a little patience.
How do I know you are not just spinning up spam pages?
Because I deliberately do not. I build one strong page per real intent, with genuine York and North Yorkshire detail, real contact information and proper internal links. You can see the approach in my portfolio and pricing.
